JBL Go 4 Review

Sometimes you just want music without carrying a big speaker. The JBL Go 4 fits in your palm, clips to your bag, and sounds way better than something this tiny has any right to.

Design & Portability

The JBL Go 4 is ridiculously small — about the size of a deck of cards and weighing just 188 grams. It's genuinely pocket-sized, and the integrated loop/clip on the back lets you attach it to backpacks, belt loops, beach bags, or bike handlebars. JBL offers it in a range of fun colors including blue, black, red, pink, purple, and white.

The build quality feels premium despite the low price. The fabric-wrapped body has a rubberized base that keeps it stable on surfaces, and the buttons on top (power, Bluetooth, volume, play/pause) are tactile and easy to find by touch.

Sound Quality

This is where the Go 4 genuinely surprises. For a speaker this small, the sound is remarkably full and clear. The 4.2W driver produces detailed mids and crisp highs that fill a small room or outdoor area nicely. JBL's signature sound tuning gives everything a lively, engaging quality.

Bass is present but naturally limited by the speaker's tiny size — you won't feel thumping low-end, but there's enough warmth that music doesn't sound thin. At maximum volume, it stays clean without distortion, which is impressive for such a compact driver.

It's a mono speaker, so there's no stereo separation. But with the new Auracast feature, you can pair multiple JBL speakers together for a bigger, more immersive sound experience.

Waterproofing & Durability

The IP67 rating means the Go 4 is fully waterproof (submersible up to 1 meter for 30 minutes) and completely dustproof. In practical terms: it survives pools, showers, rain, beach sand, and accidental drops into water. I've used it poolside and in the shower without any issues.

This ruggedness makes it the ideal companion for outdoor activities — hiking, camping, beach trips, picnics, or just backyard hangouts. You don't have to baby it.

Battery Life

JBL rates the Go 4 at 7.5 hours, and in real-world use at moderate volume, that's about right. Playing at higher volumes will reduce this to around 5-6 hours, which is still enough for a full day out. Charging is via USB-C and takes about 3 hours to fully charge.

One minor complaint: there's no battery level indicator beyond a single LED, so you're often guessing how much charge is left.

Connectivity

Bluetooth 5.3 ensures a stable, reliable connection with low latency. Pairing is instant once you've connected a device, and switching between devices is straightforward. The Auracast feature lets you pair with other compatible JBL speakers for multi-room or outdoor party setups.

Notable absence: there's no built-in microphone, so you can't use it for phone calls or voice assistants. If that's important to you, look at the JBL Clip 5 instead.

Should You Buy It?

The JBL Go 4 is the best ultra-portable Bluetooth speaker you can buy. At $49.99, it's affordable, the sound quality punches above its weight, and the IP67 rating makes it genuinely worry-free for any environment. Whether you want music at the pool, in the shower, on a hike, or at your desk, this tiny speaker delivers.

If you need more bass or louder volume, step up to the JBL Flip 6. But for pure portability, nothing beats the Go 4.
