Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Review

The Instax Mini 12 is Fujifilm's latest entry in the wildly popular Instax instant camera line, and it improves on the Mini 11 in subtle but meaningful ways. The biggest upgrade is the new automatic exposure system — the camera reads the ambient light and adjusts shutter speed and flash output automatically. In practice, this means you get well-exposed photos in bright sunlight, indoors, and everything in between, without touching a single setting.

The close-up mode is activated by twisting the lens barrel out to the "selfie" position, which adjusts the focus distance to 0.3-0.5 meters. There's a tiny selfie mirror next to the lens for framing self-portraits, and it works well enough once you get used to the parallax offset between the mirror and the actual lens. Pro tip: aim slightly to the right of center in the mirror for better-centered selfies.

Photo quality is... Instax. The colors are warm and slightly desaturated with that signature instant film look — dreamy, nostalgic, and imperfect in all the right ways. Skin tones are flattering, blues lean toward teal, and there's a gentle softness to everything. Sharpness can't compete with a phone camera, but that's entirely the point. These photos have character.

The flash fires on every shot, which is both a strength and weakness. Indoors and at night, it ensures usable photos. In bright sunlight at close range (under 1 meter), it can sometimes wash out subjects. The improved automatic exposure system mitigates this considerably compared to the Mini 11, but it's not perfect.

Design-wise, the Mini 12 is gorgeous. The pastel color options — Lilac Purple, Mint Green, Blossom Pink, Pastel Blue, and Clay White — are softer and more refined than the Mini 11's colors. The camera feels solid despite its lightweight plastic body, and the rounded edges make it comfortable to hold. It's small enough to slip into a jacket pocket or small purse.

The elephant in the room is film cost. Instax Mini film runs about $7.99 for a 10-pack ($0.80/photo) at retail, though bulk packs on Amazon bring it down to roughly $0.60/photo. If you're shooting 20-30 photos at a party, that's $12-$18 in film. Compared to free phone photos, it's a luxury — but the tangibility of instant prints is what makes it special.

Battery life from two AA batteries is rated for about 100 shots, which in our testing was accurate. We prefer rechargeable AAs for environmental and cost reasons — the camera works perfectly with them.

Compared to the Instax Mini 11 ($69.99), the Mini 12 is worth the $10 premium for better automatic exposure and slightly refined design. The Instax Mini 40 ($99.99) offers the same internals in a more premium vintage-looking body. And the Instax Mini Evo ($199.99) adds a digital screen, Bluetooth, and the ability to print phone photos — but at more than double the price, it's a different product entirely.

The Instax Mini 12 isn't about image quality or technical specifications. It's about the joy of watching a photo develop in your hands, the excitement of sharing prints at a party, and the warmth of sticking a physical photo on your fridge. In that regard, it's absolutely perfect.
