Nine years is a long time between generations, and Google has clearly used that time wisely. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) is a ground-up redesign that improves on its predecessor in every meaningful way.

The design is immediately striking. The larger 2.7-inch display sits behind a mirrored surface, bordered by a thin stainless steel bangle that doubles as the main control — press and rotate to adjust temperature. When the display is off, it looks like a sleek circular mirror on your wall. When it activates, the Dynamic Farsight feature uses Google's Soli radar to detect your distance and show relevant information — time and weather from across the room, detailed HVAC status up close.

The AI-powered Smart Schedules are the real star. The thermostat learns when you wake up, when you leave for work, when you return, and what temperatures you prefer at each point. After a week or two, it creates a custom schedule that you rarely need to adjust. It even accounts for external factors like weather forecasts and how quickly your home heats or cools.

Matter compatibility is a game-changer. Previous Nest thermostats were locked into the Google ecosystem, but the 4th Gen works natively with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and more. This makes it a safe bet regardless of which smart home platform you prefer.

The included temperature sensor is a thoughtful addition. Place it in your bedroom, living room, or any problem area, and the thermostat can use that room's temperature as its reference point instead of just the hallway where it's installed. You can pair up to six sensors and set schedules based on specific rooms at different times of day.
